About Giclee Prints
By Raymond Wattenhofer
Giclee prints are printed using a computer and a high end ink jet printer. The giclee (zhee-CLAY) prints I make from my originals are done using this process.
I begin the process by taking a high quality digital image of an original 2 dimensional art piece. After uploading the image to my computer I make any correction needed to bring the image to the highest level of perfection possible. When this is accomplished the image is ready to print.
The printer I have chosen to print very high quality images is the Epson 7600 with Ultra Chrome Inks ®. The Ultra Chrome Ink is a pigmented ink that has a very wide color gamut with the light fastness of professional artist quality paints.
I use two different media for printing images on. One is canvas and the other is paper. The main difference is that a print on canvas will have a weave texture similar to the canvas used for painting originals. Paper has its own unique texture and varies according to the type of paper used.
A print done on canvas is coated with a UV varnish once the ink has completely dried. This type of print does not require glass to protect the surface from the atmosphere. Care of a canvas print is the same as an original oil painting.
Paper prints require a glass cover to protect them from the ambient air.
