Bison, or "buffalo" as they are commonly known, start the rut season in late summer. The big bulls return to the cows after spending most of the year away from the heard, usually as loners, fattening up for the rut season. Often these bulls challenge one another and these challenges can at times end up being rather dramatic fights between two very strong bull buffalo. In the end the strongest, most agile buffalo bull will become the dominate breeder.
