This is buffalo country in the heart of South Dakota. Much of the west river country has a rugged character that is covered with nutritious grasses and herbs that buffalo thrive on. At times it is a great distance between water sources such as the one in this painting. Buffalo have an incredible way of finding water and will paw the earth to expose a shallow source of water. A very hardy animal to say the least.
